La séptima parada del ASP World Tour comenzó con una jornada brumosa y olas de un metro en Lower Trestles, la primera sorpresa del día llegó en el heat 6 cuando el líder del circuito, Kelly Slater, se ubicó detrás de Brett Simpson y se vio obligado a caer a la segunda ronda, instancia en donde venció a Dane Reynolds para seguir en carrera.
La primera ronda clasificó a Nat Young, Taj Burrow, Jordy Smith, Travis Logie, Mick Fanning, Brett Simpson, Gabriel Medina, Filipe Toledo, C.J Hobgood, Adam Melling, Julian Wilson y Michael Bourez.
El plato fuerte la priimera ronda se dio en el heat penúltimo heat, Julian Wilson anotó 17.40 puntos sobre Miguel Pupo (15.50) y John John Florence (12.97), en una de las baterías más disputadas y festejadas por la gente que se acercó a Lower Trestles para ver a los mejores en acción.
La ronda de perdedores sirvió para mantener en carrera a Slater, Parkinson, Kerr y de Souza, ahora resta esperar al segundo día de competencia para concluir con la segunda ronda y seguir abriendo el cuadro. Cabe destacar al comandante de la armada verdeamarelha, Adriano de Souza, quien anotó la nota más alta del día, 9.73 en su segunda actuación donde dejó fuera de competencia a Mitch Crews.
